Open call: dossier on youth, film and series for the journal REUTOPIA accepts proposals until 8 December
Researchers and teachers who study youth, film and series have an open call to take part in an international dossier. The project “Juventud y cine en el fin de los tiempos: Europa y América Latina” (Youth and cinema at the end of times: Europe and Latin America), coordinated by researcher Alejandro Ventura, is gathering authors to propose a themed dossier to the Revista de Estudios Utópicos (REUTOPIA), published by Editorial CSIC in Spain, for its second-semester 2027 issue.
The call was circulated by AsAECA (Argentine Association for Film and Audiovisual Studies) and forwarded to Rede Kino, the Latin American Network for Education, Cinema and Audiovisual, on 29 October 2026.
Deadlines
- Now, before 8 December 2026: anyone who wants to take part sends the coordinator a provisional title, a short description of the article and their academic details. He uses this list to build the dossier proposal.
- 8 December 2026: the journal’s deadline for dossier proposals.
- January 2027: the journal announces which dossiers have been selected.
- 1 September 2027: full articles are due; they are then reviewed and edited for issue 6 of the journal (second semester of 2027).
Please note: the journal chooses among the proposals it receives. Answering the coordinator’s call does not guarantee publication.
Who coordinates it
Alejandro Ventura holds a PhD in Communication from Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, with the thesis “Juventud y cine. De los jóvenes rebeldes a los jóvenes virtuales” (Youth and cinema: from rebel youth to virtual youth), and teaches film language at the Dodecá Film School, run by the Dodecá Foundation, which also hosts a cultural centre and a utopian studies programme. In 2023 he presented part of this research at the 26th SOCINE Meeting in Brazil.
The journal
REUTOPIA is an open-access scholarly journal on utopias and utopianism published by Editorial CSIC (Spanish National Research Council). It publishes research on utopian phenomena understood not only as fictions of better worlds but also as proposals, experiences and social practices, from many fields, including film studies and education.

The dossier proposal
The dossier looks at youth in recent European and Latin American films and series, at a time marked by the crisis of utopian horizons. Its starting question is what happens to young people when the possibility of imagining and building different futures disappears, and which tensions and forms of resistance emerge in that scenario.
Some suggested themes, which are not exhaustive:
- youth and violence;
- masculinities and new forms of misogyny;
- sexualities and emotional bonds;
- far-right extremism and new political movements;
- student mobilisations and other forms of collective action;
- migration, race and social exclusion;
- digital cultures;
- precarity and uncertainty about the future;
- conflicts between generations.
The corpus is films and series released from 2000 onwards, but articles may engage with older works.
Journal guidelines for dossiers
- Five or six articles of 8,000 to 10,000 words each, plus an introduction of up to 3,000 words written by the coordinator(s).
- Accepted languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, Catalan, Galician or English.
- The proposal includes the title, the coordinators’ names and affiliations, a rationale and a table of contents with the title, author and affiliation of each article. Full texts are not required at this stage.
- The journal values proposals that also include a piece for its “Actualidad y experiencias” section (interviews, debates, notes on projects and experiences).
How to take part
Step 1, now: dossier proposal (by 8 December 2026)
To join Alejandro Ventura’s dossier, write to him with a provisional title, a short description of the article and your academic details:

He submits the proposal to the journal. According to the official call, dossier proposals are sent by email, not through the journal’s system. Anyone who wants to propose a different dossier, on their own topic related to utopias, can write directly to the journal:
reutopia@csic.es
Step 2, if the dossier is approved: full article (by 1 September 2027)
Articles are submitted through the journal’s online system, which requires registration and login:
https://reutopia.revistas.csic.es/index.php/reutopia/about/submissions
The journal requires:
- the text in the journal’s Word template;
- two versions: a Word file with author details and an anonymised PDF, including the file metadata;
- a signed authorship declaration;
- an ORCID for each author;
- an abstract of up to 150 words, in the original language and in English;
