Open call: symposium on youth and cinema at the International Congress of Americanists (ICA 2027) accepts papers until 31 January

The project “Juventud y cine en el fin de los tiempos: Europa y América Latina” (Youth and cinema at the end of times: Europe and Latin America) has opened a call for papers for a symposium at the 59th International Congress of Americanists (ICA 2027), held from 5 to 9 July 2027 at the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana in Medellín, Colombia. Proposals are accepted until 31 January 2027 through the congress’s official platform.

The symposium looks at how film and audiovisual works made since 2000 portray today’s youth, at a time when horizons of the future are in crisis. The project brings together researchers, teachers, students and institutions from Europe and Latin America.

Themes

Proposals analyse audiovisual works produced from 2000 to the present. The themes are open lines of research, not closed boxes:

  1. Rebel youth after the end of utopia
  2. Masculinities and implosive, unexpected violence
  3. Youth, gender and contemporary vulnerability
  4. Power reconfigured in new kinds of family
  5. The sexual turn as a code of post-utopian youth
  6. Emotional crisis and social fragmentation
  7. Migration, exclusion and structural violence
  8. Dystopias and youth survival strategies
  9. Education at the end of times
  10. Youth subcultures and collective belonging
  11. Youth extremism: from the far right to criminal economies
  12. Gothic and youth horror

For those who work in schools: theme 9, Education at the end of times

This theme looks at schools as places of socialisation, discipline and conflict, at a time of crisis of authority, fast cultural change and uncertainty about the future. It covers new pedagogies, sex education, school violence, youth radicalisation and the challenges of digital culture, as well as teachers who try to redefine their own authority. The call’s PDF lists as references the films “The Wave” (Die Welle), “The Class” (Entre les murs), “Las niñas” and “After Lucia” (Después de Lucía).
